Springfield Armory, M1888 Trapdoor rifle, Cal: 45-70, MFG: 1891, S/N: 529326, Single shot breechloader, 32 5/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: The model 1888 was the last of the trapdoor Springfields. It was Springfields third attempt to design a cleaning rod bayonet for the Trapdoor & was the design adopted & produced in largest numbers. It would be the main service arm for the US until 1892 when the Krag-Jorgensen rifle was adopted & the rod bayonet concept would be abandoned until the next service rifle (M1903) where they would again test it & ultimately found not strong enough for service use.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good near excellent with only light nicks, dings, & scratches. The left flat of the stock has the acceptance/inspector's cartouche ''SWP'' over ''1891'' inside a box. The top of the comb is stamped ''B'' over ''53''. The right cheek of the stock is marked ''71'' & ''123''. The bottom of the wrist is stamped ''Y'' & the ''P'' in circle firing proof. The blued finish rates 40% overall with spots of thinning toning brown & scratches/wear spots on the barrel near the muzzle. The breech block & wrist tag have thinned remains of the case-hardened finish under the old caked on storage grease. There is more old storage grease in protected spots on the receiver, & inside of the action & lock causing ''mushiness'' when the hammer is cocked. The breech block is marked ''US'', over ''MODEL'', over ''1884''. The rear of the receiver has the S/N. left side of the chamber marked ''V'', over ''P'', over a eagle's head, over ''P'', ''R'', & the top is marked ''A''. The lock plate is marked with a American great eagle next to ''US'', over ''SPRINGFIELD''. The lock plate markings are slightly thinned. Both barrel bands are marked ''U''. The bore is excellent. It's bright & shiny with little visible wear. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a Buffington ladder rear sight. The stock carries a steel trapdoor buttplate. plates mostly worn gray with some patina, nothing inside trapdoor. Rifle has both factory sling loops with the third stacking loop. Mechanical function appears solid. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 800 to 1600
