Remington, Model M1903-A3 (03-A3), Cal: .30-06, MFG: 1942, S/N: 3957407, bolt action rifle, 24'' barrel.
HISTORY: Between 1941-42, Remington would start implementing simplifications to the M1903 rifle by replacing some milled parts of the rifle over to stamped in order to save time & money. They were small parts like the magazine followers, barrel bands, & trigger guards. Guns made by them or refurbished during this time could see a mix of parts. The military would adopt the M1903-A3 in May of 1942 & it would include all the simplifications done by Remington as well as replacing the rear sight with a aperture that was mounted to the rear of the receiver
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is excellent with only a couple superficial scratches visible. Stock has some small nicks & dings. The bottom of the wrist has a Circle ''P'' firing proof (partially thinned). The bottom of the stock, just in front of the mag has four thinned proof marks. The left side of stock, above the trigger is stamped ''RA'', a crossed cannon US Ordnance acceptance stamp, & ''FJA''. This shows the stock was made by Remington, the rifle was inspected by inspector Lt. Col Frank J. Atwood & accepted by Ordnance for the military. Further down the stock is a crisp ''OG'' stamp indicating this rifle war refurbished at the Ogden arsenal after WW2. The metal carries a arsenal re-finish with some thinned markings & spots of roughness under the finish. The metal has also been covered in a protective lacquer. The green parkerized metal finish rates 98% overall. The receiver band is marked ''U.S.'', ''REMINGTON'', ''MODEL 03-A3'', the S/N, & a small punch mark just under the S/N. This punch mark is a leftover mark from the Rockwell B Hardness test when the receiver was made. Multiple punch marks would indicate it was re-proofed when it was refurbished. The top end of the barrel is marked ''R A'', flaming bomb, ''7-43'', ''P''. The bolt handle & front barrel band are marked ''R'' indicating they were made by Remington. The bore is excellent. It's bright & shiny with minor thinning to rifling. Earlier four-groove rifling. The barrel holds a blade front sight with sight hoods & a receiver mounted elevation adjustable, aperture rear sight. The stock carries a checkered steel trapdoor buttplate. Nothing inside trapdoor. Rifle has both bottom sling loops with the third stacking swivel. A nice WW2 made & refurbished 03-A3. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 700 to 1400
