Description

Remington, M1871 Rolling Block New York state contract, Cal: .50-70, MFG: 1871, S/N: 16319 (on tang under wood), Single shot breechloading rifle, 36'' barrel.

HISTORY: In 1871, the governor of New York bought 15,000 rolling block rifles to arm the states militia, after the Navy Bureau of Ordnance tested the Rolling block in 1869 & found they were fit for service for the Navy & Marines. It features a half-cock hammer safety that sets the hammer back into the new half-cock notch when the breech is closed after loading, this feature was proposed during US military testing as a safety feature. They were chambered in the US military cartridge at the time 50-70. A little over 5,000 more would be bought through the 1870's leading to a little over 20,000 Rolling block rifles for the new York militia. This rifle is from the first contact from Nov. 16, 1871 based on the tang markings.

CONDITION: The two-piece, straight wrist walnut stock is very good with nicks, dings, & dents from use/age. There is a 1 1/2'' crack at the tip of the forend. There is a faded inspectors cartouche on the left wrist, left cheek, & right wrist, right cheek stamped with the rack number ''7''.The metal appears to have been buffed clean as some point. The metal is mostly gun metal gray with speckled patina, there is slightly more concentrated roughness in spots along the stock line. Left side of the receiver is stamped ''B''. The upper tang is marked with the three line 'REMINGTON'' address & patents ending in ''NOV. 7th 1871''. The left side of the chamber has a ''S'', the right is stamped ''P''. the rear sling loop has patent info on it & all barrel band stamped ''B'' on the left & right, rear band is marked ''H'' instead of ''B'' on the right. Rear sight marked ''B''. The bore is good. its bright & shiny with lightly thinned rifling & roughness. The barrel holds a worn small barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder aperture rear sight marked 1 to 4 on the base & 5 to 10 on the ladder. The stock carries a steel buttplate, mostly toned gray with some brown patina. The rifle has both factory sling loops, but is missing the cleaning/clearing rod. Mechanical function appears solid. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 2000
