Remington, Model: No.1 rolling block, M1868 Egyptian contract, Cal: .43 Egyptian, MFG: 1868-76, S/N: NVSN, Breech loading single shot rifle, 35 1/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: Egypt would place an order of 60,000 No.1 rolling blocks in .43 Egyptian in 1868. Before the order could be delivered, Egypt (which had had close ties with the French since the Napoleonic excursions and the building of the Suez canal), ''defaulted'' on the contract so that a large part of the order could be sold to France, since they were fighting the Franco-Prussian war at the time & were in dire need of arms. Its estimated that 13,000 rolling blocks were delivered to France at that time. After the war ended in 1871, Egypt would place the same order again & the last of the 60,000 rifles were delivered in 1876. Remington was already making rolling block for the Spanish in .43 Spanish, but governments at that time considering it a matter of national prestige to field arms with proprietary cartridges, so Egypt wanted their own cartridge, It was based on the .43 Spanish cartridge though.
CONDITION: The two-piece straight wrist walnut stock is very good with various nicks, dings, & scratches from use, most have been smoothed over from handling wear. The metal is proud to the wood around the buttplate & wrist tangs. The metal has worn to a gun metal gray with speckled patina & roughness across the metal. The upper tang markings are worn away with a faint indent from where the marking was still present. The left side of the receiver is marked ''EP'' over a crescent moon (this was for Egyptian police) & one other thinned marking. The chamber is marked with many Arabic unit & S/N markings some are lined out. The fining pin is missing from the front block. The bore is good. Its bright, has light roughness with proud rifling that is worn smooth at the muzzle. The barrel holds a worn small barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight. The base is marked 1 to 4, & the ladder is marked 5 to 9. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina. The top ''hump'' of the buttplate has worn all the way to the wood. The rifle has both sling loops & the cleaning/clearing rod. Mechanical function solid other than missing the firing pin, because of this it is being sold AS IS with NO RETURNS ACCEPTED. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 250 to 500
