Remington, M1902 No.5 Rolling block, Cal: 7x57mm Mauser, MFG: 1901-17, S/N: None, Single shot breech loading rifle, 30 '' barrel.
HISTORY: These are some of the last Rolling block rifles made by Remington. Made when the repeating arms were dominating the world but some nations needed a cheaper alternative to arm their troops, or to arm rear line support troops to free the more advance & expensive rifles for front line use. The M1902 No.5 improved on the M1897 No.5 which was the first smokeless powder Rolling block. The name did not officially change but collectors call the improved model M1902 after the year it was introduced, these would be marked with a 1901 patent date. These used new built parts rather than scavenging & converted older rifles. The M1902 used a improved Rotary automatic extractor which worked better on rimless cartridges over the older side slot extractor. Around 1910, the M1902 would be fitted with a banded front sight & a cheaper ramp type rear sight & leaf. The name again did not change officially but collectors would call them M1910's after the year it was introduced. Around 98,000 7mm No.5 Remington rolling blocks would be made from 1896/7- 1918. Many small nations would buy these rifles to supplement their Mauser in 7mm, or to cheaply & reliably update to a smokeless cartridge, being particularly popular in southern America. Britan would also buy a batch of 4500 rifles in 1915 to arm mine sweepers on boast who would shoot the mines with their rifles to dispose of them.
CONDITION: The two piece, straight wrist walnut stock is excellent with only a few superficial nicks & dings & some finish thinning on the cheeks. The left side of the forend has marks ''burnt'' into the wood that appear to read ''2'' over ''5'' or ''6'' like symbol, over ''B''. The blue on the barrel rates 35%, mostly thinned & toning to a brown patina on the top of the barrel with deep blue remining in protected areas. The rolling blocks & block pins retain most of their blue. The receiver has thinned remains of case hardened finish around pins & screws, but has mostly toned o a gray/brown patina. the upper tang is marked ''REMINGTON ARMS CO.'' over a two line address & patent line ending in 1901. The top of the barrel, just in front of the handguard is stamped ''CAL.7M.M''. both barrel bands marked ''U'' on the right. The bore is excellent. Bright & shiny with strong rifling. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a tangent/flip up ladder, U-notch rear sight marked 1 to 5 on the base & 6 to 19 on the ladder. The stock carries a steel buttplate, buffed clean with light roughness. The rifle has both factory sling loops but is missing the cleaning rod. rifle comes with the correct M1902 bayonet with the ''REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILLION N.Y.'' marking in the left fuller of the blade. Mechanical function appears solid. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 500 to 1000
