Boer/ ZAR Marked, unknown British manufacture, Martini-henry ''4 Pound'' rifle, Cal: .577/450 Martini-Henry, MFG: 1880's-90's, S/N: 3365, Single shot breech loading rifle, 33 1/4'' barrel.
HISTORY: These rifles were made by smaller shops over in Britain with a mix of surplus British parts, & new production commercial parts to sell to the ZAR during the 1870s-90's. The South African government at the time, ZAR ( Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek ''South African Republic''), & the OVS (Oranje Vrij Staat ''Orange free state'') would buy large batches of rifles & sold them to the Boer soldiers. This lead to the Boers becoming extremely proficient with their rifles since they used them day to day, proving a massive headache to the British during both Boer wars. Since the Boers owned their rifles they would personalize them with cravings, their names or places they've been, as well as cutting them down & shaping stocks. This rifle has had the forend shorten and shaped which was fairly common modification the Boers did at the time to copy the more expensive sporting guns at the time called ''Kraal-lope'' or ''bare-barrels'', this semi-free floats the barrel leading to less point of impact shifts from pressure from the wood making the rifles inherently more accurate. This Martini-Henry fits the bill for one of the rifle assembled in Britain from a mix of military & commercial parts, the bought by the ZAR to sell to Boers for 4 pound sterling, hence the nickname they received.
CONDITION: The two-piece, straight wrist walnut stock is good with a chip to the left of the forend tip. Stock has various nicks, dings, gouges & scratches from use over time as well as being darkened from added oils. The buttplate is slightly proud to the wood all the way around. The metal has mostly toned to a even chocolate brown patina with handling spots showing gray, roughness & cleaned pitting scattered across the metal. The left side of the receiver is marked ''Z.A.R.'' over ''3365'' (Applied by the ZAR government when it was received & assigned a ZAR S/N/ Issue number). The cocking indicator is the Mk.3 short variation & has a thinned British broad arrow stamp, indicating its a surplus military part. The left rear of the barrel is marked with Birmingham commercial proofs & the bore measurement ''52''. The bore is good to fair. It beginning to darken with strong rifling & roughness/light pitting throughout the bore. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with tangent/ladder V-notch rear sight marked 100 to 400 on the base, & 8 to 12 on the ladder. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina, plate has roughness & small dings. Rifle has no sling provision & the cleaning/clearing rod was removed when the forend was shortened. Mechanical function appears solid. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1500
