Description

SCARCE!!, FEG Budapest - Hungary, M1895 Mannlicher ''Infanterie RepetierGewehr M.95'', Cal: 8x50mmR Mannlicher, MFG: 1915, S/N: 4906H, straight pull bolt action rifle, 30'' barrel.

HISTORY: Designed by Fedinand Ritter von Mannlicher & adopted in 1895, it took the rotating lug bolt of the Earlier M1890 carbine, & configured into a full length infantry rifle. The rotating lug bolt was Mannlicher's first straight pull bolt design back in 1884, but at the time it was over complicated for black powder pressure, so he invented a dropping-bar lock that was simpler & worked good enough for black powder. However once Astro-Hungarian Empire switched to the small bore smokeless 8x50mmR cartridge in 1890, he went back to his first design which was strong enough & made the M1890 carbine as a alternative to the new M1890 rifle as it was shorter & handier & it would be adopted. These would be used through WW1 & in the 1930's the vast majority of them would be shorted & re-chambered to the hotter 8x56mmR, leaving very few rifles in original configuration left.

CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip wood stock is good with numerus nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use over time. Darkened oil stains in handling spots & around the buttplate. The stock has shrunk over time leading the metal proud to the wood in spots. There is a 2'' x 1 1/2'' arsenal wood plug repair on the left side of the stock, just in front of the finger groove. The forward upper handguard has a 6'' grain crack. The right cheek of the stock has a heavily faded S/N marking with scuffs from shouldering with a helmet over it, S/N does not appear to match rifle indicating its a replaced stock. The bottom of the wrist & just in front of the magazine have more worn cartouches. The metal has toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina with thinned remains of blue present in protected areas of the magazine. Speckels of rust & roughness across the metal. The top of the receiver is marked ''BUDAPEST'', over ''M.95''. The S/N is marked on the left side of the receiver & chamber. The top of the chamber is marked with the Austrian acceptance mark & date ''BP'' crest ''15''. The right side of the receiver & chamber is marked with small proofs. The upper extension of the buttplate stamped ''HI''. Bore is good to fair. Beginning to darken with roughness/light pitting throughout the bore but has strong rifling. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a flip up ladder, V-notch rear sight marked 6 to 26. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toned brown with some roughness. Stock has both bottom sling loops with the stacking hook on the front barrel band. Mechanical function appears solid. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 300 to 900
