Description

RSAF Enfield, No.1 Mk. III* SHTLE (SMLE) Fianna Fail marked, Cal: .303 British, MFG: 1918 (1927 replacement barrel), S/N: A13169 (J7869 lined out), Bolt action rifle, 25 3/8'' barrel.

HISTORY: The No.1 MK.III* is a simplification of the No.1 Mk.III that was done to speed up production for WW1. Adopted in 1915 it removed the volley sights & the magazine cut-off from the rifle. This is the longest produced pattern of the SMLE being made from 1915 clear till the 1960's in countries like Australia & India. Total production numbers of the No.1 MK.3* is unknown & mixed up with other No.3 models but is in the millions. Fianna Fail means ''Men of Destiny'' in Gaelic & was the name of a major pollical party in Ireland at the time. Rifles bought by the Irish government from Britain were marked with a double ''F'' in circle on the barrel, receiver, or stock.

CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip, two-piece wood stock is very good with various small nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. The right cheek of the stock has a unmarked brass unit disc. The bottom of the wrist has a couple proof stamps. The metal carries a arsenal refinish with thinned markings & some light roughness visible under the finish. The blued finish rates 90% overall with wear on edges showing gray & toning brown. The Right side of the wrist band marked with a crown over ''GR'', over ''ENFIELD'', over ''1918'', over ''SHTLE'', over a partially visible ''III*''. The receiver band is marked with proofs & a newer S/N stamped above the older lined out number ''J7869'' (new S/N was applied when it was refinished as its over the new finish). The right side of the chamber is marked with the new S/N & one small proof. The Left side of the chamber is marked with many small proofs, ''E'' over ''27'' (Enfield made in 1927) as well as a double ''F'' in circle. The top of the barrel, just behind the rear sight is marked ''HV'' over ''SC''. The safety lever is marked ''III''. Most other metal parts have small proofs. The right protective ear for the rear sight has someone's SSN scratched into it. S/N matching bolt & nose cap. The bore is very good near excellent. Its bright & shiny with strong rifling throughout that is just slightly thinned at the muzzle & no visible roughness. The barrel holds a square blade front sight with protective ears, as well as a ramped base U-notch rear sight marked 2 to 20. The stock carries a brass trapdoor buttplate, nothing inside trapdoor. Stock has both factory sling loops with the third stacking swivel. Mechanical function appears solid. A beautiful example of a intra-war refurbished SMLE that was sold to & used by the Irish Government. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 500 to 1000
