Rifle Factory Ishapore, No.1 Mk. III* SMLE, Cal: .303 British, MFG: 1945, S/N: 31622J, Bolt action rifle, 25 3/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: The No.1 MK.III* is a simplification of the No.1 Mk.III that was done to speed up production for WW1. Adopted in 1915 it removed the volley sights & the magazine cut-off from the rifle. this is the longest produced pattern of the SMLE being made from 1915 clear till the 1960's in countries like Australia & India. Total production numbers of the No.1 MK.3* is unknown & mixed up with other No.3 models but is in the millions.
CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip, two-piece wood stock is excellent with a couple superficial nicks & dings from light use. Stock was lightly sanded & refinished by a arsenal just before it was imported leaving cartouches thinned. There is some oil staining on the forend, just in front of the wrist band the right cheek of the stock is marked ''J.O.D.'' in circle (Indian Ordnance Depot stamp), & ''S'' arrow ''A'' in circle (Republic of India stamp). The bottom of the wrist is marked with many proof stamps, ''S'' & ''R'', ''6'' is stamped just in front of the mag, & the S/N with some other proofs are stamped on the bottom of the forend, just before the nose cap. The metal carries a arsenal re-blue with some thinned markings & a couple spots of light roughness dotted around. The metal finish rates 97% overall with light wear on edges. Right side of the wrist band marked with a crown over ''G.R.I.'' (GEORGE REX IMPERATOR), over ''1945'', over ''No.1Mk.III*''. The left side of the band is stamped ''ENGLAND'' for import. The receiver band is marked with proofs & the S/N. Most other metal parts have small proofs. S/N matching bolt & nose cap. The bore is excellent. Its bright & shinny with strong rifling & little to no visible wear. The barrel holds a square blade front sight with protective ears, as well as a ramped base U-notch rear sight marked 2 to 20. The stock carries a brass trapdoor buttplate, with a cleaning rope & brass oil tube (with broad arrow) inside. Stock has both factory sling loops & comes with a period correct tan canvas sling marked ''J & AH 1944'', broad arrow over ''97''. Mechanical function appears solid. A nice example of a Ishapore SMLE in freshly refurbished condition. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 400 to 800
