Rifle Factory Ishapore, 2A SMLE, Cal: 7.62x51mm, MFG: 1965, S/N: A37668, Bolt action rifle, 25 3/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: the 2A/2A1 rifles are 7.62x51mm Nato chambered SMLE's that went into production in 1962 after the .303 British No.1 Mk.3* SMLE was beginning to be phased out of the military with India transitioning over to the 1A (FN FAL) in 1965. It was adopted as a reserve arm for the Army in 1963. The rifle is identical to a No.1 Mk.3* other than being chambered in 7.62x51mm, leading to the magazine being more squared off, & the buttplate from the 1A. once 1A production started. The rifles parts would be simplified & made cheaper as time went on & the later 2A1 featured a rear sight that only went to 800 meters instead of 2000. Some of the later made rifles would even used salvaged stocks & parts from earlier .303 rifles. The bolt & receiver's were made out of stronger nickel steel to deal with the higher pressure 7.62x51mm ammo. Approximately 250,000 2A & 2A1 rifles were made from 1962-74 when production ended. The 2A & 2A1 rifles were the last bolt action rifle designed & issued by a regular military force other than specialized sniping rifles. Today its no longer in service with the military but some Indian police agencies still use it.
CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip, two-piece wood stock is excellent with a couple superficial nicks & dings from light use on the forend. Stock shows carving marks from its manufacture. There are old drips of white paint at the rear of the upper handguard, & on the bottom of the wrist. The left cheek of the stock marked with a partially visible ''24'' in white paint. The right cheek is marked with a partially faded ''S'' arrow ''A'' in circle cartouche (Republic of India stamp). He bottom of the wrist has multiple thinned proof stampings. The bottom of the forend, behind the front barrel band, is marked with the S/N & multiple proof stampings. The Suncorite paint over parkerized metal finish rates 70% overall with thinned spots showing the parkerized metal under & some spots worn gray & toning brown. Right side of the wrist band marked with the Lion National emblem of India, over ''RIFLE'', over ''7.62MM2A'', over ''R.F.I.'', over ''1965''. The receiver band is marked with proofs & the S/N. S/N is also marked on the right side of the chamber. The right side of receiver marked with ''CAI'' import stamps. Most other metal parts have small proofs. S/N matching bolt & nose cap. The bore is excellent. Its bright & shinny with strong rifling. The barrel holds a square blade front sight with protective ears, as well as a ramped base U-notch rear sight marked 2 to 20. The stock carries a aluminum trapdoor buttplate, has nothing inside. Stock has both factory sling loops. Mechanical function appears solid. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 400 to 800
