Birmingham Small Arms Co. (BSA) (M47 code), No.4 Mk.1 SMLE, Cal: .303 British, MFG: 1943, S/N: 3190 (import MK407116), Bolt action rifle, 25 1/4'' barrel.
HISOTRY: The No.4 Mk.1 would start development in the early 1930's with the need for more streamlined & accurate rifle. It featured a heavier barrel in proving accuracy, a receiver mounted aperture sight taken from their testing with the P13/14 Enfield rifles, the aperture sight was easier to use in a battlefield setting & the longer sight radius further improves accuracy. The receiver shape was changed to be faster to produce & was actually stronger than the earlier design. It also switch many of the smaller parts to being stamped, further improving manufacture time & cost. Only around 2,500 trials rifles would be made through the 30's until mas production started mid 1941.
CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip, two-piece beech stock is very good with superficial nicks, dings, & scratches from use as well as some vice marks. The metal is slightly proud to the wood around the buttplate & wrist. The bottom of the wrist has a faded ''X'' stamp, just in front of the magazine is marked ''T'', & just before the front barrel band, on the bottom of the forend is marked with a faded 2 digit number. The metal has toned to a even mix of thinned parkerization, gun metal gray & brown patina, with some spots on the receiver buffed gray by the importer. Rough machining marks from rushed war time production still visible. The left side of the wrist band is marked ''M47'', over ''1943'', over the S/N (these appear to have been restamped by a repair arsenal at some point with buff marks & older markings present under these markings). The left side of the receiver is marked ''1'', a faint ''NO4MK1'', & double stamped import S/N's (bottom number has been lined through & buffed). The end of the barrel is stamped with ''CAI'' import stamps. ''S'' (savage-stevens) marked front barrel band & magazine assembly/trigger guard. S/N mismatched bolt (AE9556) & unmarked mag. The bore is good. it's bright with proud rifling throughout that's slightly thinned at the muzzle & roughness throughout the bore. The barrel holds a square blade front sight with protective ears (there is a crack in the right ear). The receiver holds a L-leaf aperture rear sight. The stock carries a aluminum trapdoor buttplate. Plate has small nicks, & dings. Nothing inside trapdoor. Stock has both factory sling loops. Mechanical function appears solid. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 250 to 500
