ROF Maltby/ Golden State Arms Corp., No.4 Mk.1* SMLE/ Santa Fe Special, Cal: .303 British, MFG: 1944, S/N: BT14265, Bolt action rifle, 23 1/2''
HISTORY: These were surplus No.4 Mk.1 SMLES that were imported & sporterized in the 1950's-60's by Golden State Arms & sold as cheap hunting rifles under the brand name Santa Fe Special.
CONDITION: The two-piece, semi-pistol grip, beech stock is very good as having the forend cutdown & being sanded & re-finished when it was imported. Buttstock has a older military arsenal toe repair/replacement. Some stains in the wood around the buttplate. The metal carries a arsenal refinish with some thinned/faded markings & spots of roughness under the finish. The parkerized metal finish on the receiver rates 90% with light overall thinning, wear on edges/corners, & light speckles of rust. The barrel rates 85% with some overall thinning as well as deeper wear spots, & light speckles of rust. The left side of the wrist band is marked ''ENGLAND'' (import mark) over ''M.1944'' over the S/N. left side of the receiver is marked in electro pencil ''NO.4MK.1 (F) FTR'' over the S/N also in Electro pencil, over stamped the S/N is ''NO.4MK.1*'' (indicates it when through full factory refurbishment at ROF Fazakerley & was upgraded to a Mk.1* at the same time). The chamber is marked with many British military & commercial proofs as well as the S/N. The left side of the barrel halfway up is marked ''SANTA FE SPECIAL'' over ''SANTE FE DIV. GOLDEN STATE ARMS CORP.'' over ''PASADENA CALIFORNIA. U.S.A.''. S/N matching bolt (electro penciled & faint likely forced matched when rebuilt & converted), S/N mismatched magazine. The bore is excellent. Bright & shiny with little visible wear. Later five-groove rifling, likely a after war replacement barrel since war time was two-groove. The barrel holds a blade front sight with a L-leaf aperture rear sight. Ther stock carries a brass trapdoor buttplate, plate is toning to a dark patina. Nothing inside the trapdoor. The stock has the factory rear sling loops & a added front swivel. Mechanical function appears solid. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 150 to 300
