Chinese Factory 296, Type 53 Mosin-Nagant, Cal: 7.62x54mmR, MFG: April 1954, S/N: 1057168 (import: T53021808), bolt action rifle, 20'' barrel.
HISTORY: China obtained blueprints & tooling from Russia in the 1950's as part of post WW2 aid packages they sent out to other allied countries to help modernize their arms industry. This included the Mosin, SKS, AK, & many other Soviet designs. Many Warsaw & aligned nations would start producing copies of the Russian arms or their own modified version into the 1950's & 60's.
CONDITION: The straight wrist Chu wood stock is good with small nicks, dings, dents, scratches, & wear from use/age. Common handling spots have worn away the finish. There are many small worn cartouches on both cheeks of the stock, around both sides of the recoil lug, bottom of the wrist, top of the comb, & one faint stamp on the forend. The metal does not appear to have an arsenal refinish, but has some poorly struck markings that are not fully visible. The blued metal finish rates 96% on the receiver with light scratches & a couple speckles of rust. The finish on the barrel rates 93% with some light scratches & spots of wear on the top of the chamber & end of the barrel. Top of barrel is marked with a ''B'' like symbol in a circle, over ''H'', over ''296'' in a half box, over ''TYPE 53'' in Chinese, over ''1954.4'', over S/N, as well as a assortment of proof marks. Left side of receiver is marked with ''C.A.I.'' importer marks. Top of rear tang & buttplate tang have the same poorly struck ''20'' mark. S/N mismatched bolt (Russian with Izhevsk marked components). S/N matching magazine floorplate, & buttplate. Bore is good. has strong rifling but with light rust & roughness throughout the bore. Barrel holds a post front sight with protective globe, & a tangent U-notch rear sight marked 1 to 10. The stock carries a blues steel buttplate, worn gray on shoulder wear spots & has light brown patina speckling. Stock has factory sling wells & comes with a period correct, Chinese canvas sling with leather dog collars. Rifle has a cleaning rod & the affixed side folding, cruciform bayonet. Mechanical function appears solid. FFL or C&R req - Value: 250 to 500
