Amberg Arsenal (Bavaria), I.G. 71 Mauser, 11x60mmR Mauser (.43 Mauser), MFG: 1877, S/N: 6793, Bolt Single shot, 31 1/2'' barrel.
HISTORY: The Mauser 1871 was the first of the long line of respected Mauser rifles. Designed by brothers Wilhelm & Paul Mauser. It was the first Metallic cartridge rifle adopted by Germany, First being adopted by Prussia in 1871, while Bavaria chose to rechamber their M1869 Werder adopted a few years previous to the 11mm Mauser cartridge for logistical reasons. They would later adopt and start producing the Mauser 71 in 1877, after they converted all their M1869 Werder rifles. This would be the only rifle Wilhem Mauser would help design as he would die in in 1882. Paul Mauser would continue to refine the Mauser rifle into what we know it as today. The unit markings on the buttplate indicate it was used by the Bavarian Infantry, 17th Regiment, 9th Company, gun #238 & was issued in 1877.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut is very good as being lightly sanded & refinished. There are older nicks & dings visible under the refinish with some other newer nicks & dings from use. The rear of the lower tang & the whole buttplate is proud to the wood. There is a 3/4'' crack on the top of the wrist, emanating from the receiver. The right cheek has a slightly thinned ''455'' stamp, some hand scratched in letters, & two faded but visible German cartouches. The belly of the stock has three more faded but visible German cartouches. Top of the wrist marked ''C''. The metal has toned to a even gun metal gray with even lightly speckled dark patina across it. The receiver was left in the white (unfinished) when it was made. brass trigger guard. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, in German script ''I.G.MOD.71.''. The right side of the receiver is marked with three Imperial German crown over letter proofs, ''1877'', ''1877''. The left side of the chamber flats are marked with the S/N, & the bore measurement ''11,05''. Top of the chamber flats marked with a crown over ''AMBERG'' (marking is faded but still visible). The right chamber flats are marked with five crown over letter proofs. Upper extension of buttplate marked with a small crown over letter proof, & the unit markings ''.B.'', ''17.R'', ''9.238.'. The buttplate is stamped ''1'' & a mismatched S/N. Receiver & barrel are S/N matching, all other parts are a mix of S/Ns. The bolt & its components match each other. The bore is very good. Its bright with strong rifling & some roughness in the grooves. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a V-notch rear sight with a rear flip up leaf & a flip up ladder marked 5 to 16 with fixed ''11'' & ''12'' marked notches. The stock carries a bare steel buttplate, speckled with brown patina. Rifle has both factory sling loops, comes with the cleaning/clearing rod, & has the brass muzzle protector that has the unit markings ''B.12 R R. 1 83.'', & a crown over ''HL'' proof. Mechanical function appears solid. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 500 to 1000
