Description

Toyo-Kogyo under Kokura Supervision, Type 99 Long, Cal: 7.7x58mm, MFG: 1940-41, S/N: 18817 (35th Series), bolt action rifle, 31 1/2'' barrel.

HISTORY: When Japan was switching from the type 38 to the type 99, there was a toss up on the barrel length to produce. The type 38 had a long barrel & for the cavalry & special troops, a carbine was made. To help ease manufacture & make the rifles handier for main line infantry, Japan would start testing a short rifle concept. The US & Britain adopted this with the M1903 Springfield & the SMLE respectively. This would enable Japan to ditch the rifle & carbine concept & just produce one rifle pattern for everyone, drastically easing logistics & made the guys who before carried the longer rifles happy. Testing would ultimately prove there was a negligible effect on accuracy in its effective firing range, compared to the benefits of switching to the shorter barrel. The final decision to switch would not be made before production of the type 99 began in the summer of 1940 at Nagoya Arsenal & the commercial firm, Toyo Kogyo. 38,000 total type 99 long rifles were made, 30,000 at Toyo Kogyo, & 8,000 at Nagoya. Production would run till the spring of 1941 when production shifted to the short rifle. It is speculated that once short rifle production began, the long rifles were shelved at arsenals & had their dust covers & monopods scavenged for other rifles. explaining why those accessories are rarely seen on the long rifles & why most are in pretty good condition. They would've remained on Japan's mainland & would've been surrendered at the end of the war, explaining why most of the survivors have ground off Chrysanthemums. However, some examples do have intact Chrysanthemums so the whole story is unknown

CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip Japanese Walnut (Oni-gurumi or Siebold walnut) stock is very good with various nicks, dings, & scratches from use that have been smoothed over by handling wear. Two-piece Japanese stock. no visible cartouches on the stock. The blued metal finish rates 80% on the receiver with lots of deep blue retained, spots of thinned blue, spots of cleaned rust showing gun metal gray. & spots of light roughness around the stock line. The blues finish on the barrel rates 87% with spots of thinning & light scratches. The receiver band is marked with a ground off chrysanthemum (done after the war to surrendered rifles as a face-saving gesture), over ''TYPE 99'' in Japanese. The left side of the receiver is marked with the series mark, the S/N, the Kokura arsenal logo, the Toyo-Kogyo logo, & Japanese inspectors marks. S/N mismatched bolt (all its marked components match). The bore is fair to poor. It's bright & shiny with thinned rifling, spots of roughness/light pitting & a bulge/ring in the barrel just after the front sight. Chrome lined bore & bolt face. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with protective ears (ears have been slightly bent outwards) & a flip up ladder aperture rear sight marked 3 to 15 & AA sight wings marked 2 & 3. The stock carries a blued steel cupped buttplate that's toned brown with rust & roughness. The rifle has both factory sling loops & the cleaning rod. Mechanical function appears solid. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 500 to 1000
