Description

Gardone Val Trompia Arsenal -Italy, Type I Rifle, Cal: 6.5x50mmSR, MFG: 1938-39, S/N: B7448, Bolt action rifle, 30 '' barrel.

HISTORY: In 1936, Japan & Germany would sign the Anti-Comintern pact to oppose the spread of communism, Italy joined in 1937 while Spain & Hungary joined in 1939. All the nations were in a massive effort to prepare for war, & in order to help each other out, the nations would send aid packages to each other. With the majority of arms production in Japan being controlled by & therefore going to the army, & with war heating up with China, the Japanese navy turned to European & other forend sources for arms. They loved the German Mausers but they were too expensive, so they made rifle contracts with the Czech's & Italians. The Japanese Government contracted with the Italian Government through the Teri Royal arms factory, a order of 60,000 rifles, being this Type I rifle. Terni was contracted to make the rifles & they would make up all the drawings/designs & most of the barrels, but the actual production was subcontracted out to three different manufacturers. 30,000 rifles were to be made at Gardone Val Trompia, 30,000 rifles between Beretta & FNA Brescia. In the book ''The Model 1891 Carcano Rifle'' by Giovanni Chegia & Alberto Simonelli, on page 170 its stated that S/N blocks ''A'' through ''F'' were made at Gardone, ''G'' through ''I'' (and some ''J'' because of an overrun) were made at FNA Brescia, & some of ''J'', & all of ''K'' & ''L'' were made at Beretta. The rifles are furnished just like the type 38 but with a Carcano action. The stocks of the rifles were for some reason made in two lengths. It is noted that the Japanese did not like the longer length stocks & with examples having shorter stocks it was believed the Japanese shaved some stocks down after receiving them. Both length of stocks have been shown to have a Italian proof under the buttplate so they actually did produce different lengths. Some long-stocked rifles must have gotten shaved down since some examples in full military configuration don't have Italian proofs. These only saw limited use with the majority of the rifles being captured from warehouses at the end of the war.

CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip wood stock is very good as being sanded & oiled. Japanese style two piece buttstock. There are a couple small nicks, dings, & scratches dotted around the stock from use, more concentrated gouges on the bottom of the pistol grip. The metal is proud to the wood around the toe & around the magazine & trigger guard. Small crack in the rear of the upper handguard, on the flat where the rear sight ladder rests. No Italian proof visible under buttplate. No visible cartouches on the stock. The blued metal finish rates 85% on the receiver with some spots of thinning, small scratches, speckled rust & patina. The blued finish on the barrel rates 80% with spots of thinning & wear showing gray, spots toning to a brown patina, & light speckled rust. The left side of the barrel is marked with the S/N. The root of the bolt handle is stamped ''45'' in a diamond. The bore is good. It's bright with thinned rifling, spots of roughness & light pitting. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a flip up ladder V-notch rear sight. Ladder is marked 5 to 24. The stock carries a blued steel buttplate, has wear & rust/patina. Rifle has both factory sling loops, rear sling mount's rear screw does not go all the way into the stock & has grind marks on the side. The cleaning rod is missing. Mechanical function appears solid. The tip of the trigger is broken off. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 250 to 500
