SCARCE!!, US, M1900 Krag Bowie bayonet, the blade has mostly toned to a dark gray patina with spots of bare metal gray, & speckling of light raised pitting/patina, mostly on the right side of the blade. The right side of the blade is marked ''US'', & the left side is marked ''1900''. The guard is mostly a bare metal gray with spot of brown patina. The pommel has mostly toned brown with areas of gray. The wood grips are very good with some indents & wear. The M1900 Krag bowie bayonet was another attempt by the US ordnance department to combine multiple field implements into a single multi-use tool. They wanted to combine multiple tools into one to reduce the load & equipment the soldier would have to carry, & also to save money on only having to produce one tool. The Krag Bowie, like the combination bayonets that preceded it, was a dismal failure in the field. It proved an awkward and cumbersome bayonet in use and a practically worthless entrenching tool. It was simply too small and too light to serve as an effective digging implement. Most of the bayonets saw more service as improvised machetes in the Philippine jungles than they did as bayonets or digging implements. The production amount of the bayonet varies based on sources from as many as 2,800 to just 2,000, all being made in 1900. 1,500 were sent to the Philippines and 500 sent to Cuba for field testing. Leading to very few survivors making it back here to the states. Grade: Very Good ++ - Value: 600 to 1200
