RARE Winchester, Model 1887 Repeating Shotgun, Sling Ring & Staple Riot Gun, CAL: 12 GA, MFG: 1897, Antique, SN: 61880, Lever Action Shotgun, CYL Bore, 20'' barrel. This particular shotgun is stamped ''S.P. R.R.'' on the left side of the receiver for the Southern Pacific Railroad. These early riot guns were used by express messengers, watchmen, prison guards, train hands & law enforcement. They were made with cylinder bore barrels, bored expressly to shot buckshot. With five rounds in the mag & one in the chamber, they were promoted as a superior 6 shooter to the revolver for shooting in the dark or where aim is uncertain, as the buckshot cartridge contained nine bullets compared to a single bullet by a revolver cartridge. This shotgun shows all the authentic wear of its time on the railroad. The original, round knob pistol grip wood stock is fair to good & remains solid, despite being very weathered, oil darkened & having several dry weathered & stress cracks at the wrist, end of tangs & along the sides. The two-piece forend is fair to good, heavily worn, with edge chips, nicks, numerous contusions & scratches, all consistent with its age & use. The metal finish has toned to a mix of gun metal gray & a spotty brown patina, with speckling & pitting. Rare sling ring on staple bar located on the left side of receiver. Bore is good, with spotty areas of roughness. The barrel holds a single front bead. Buttstock carries a checkered metal buttplate. An early lever repeater shotgun, with likely a lot of stories to tell. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 800 to 2000
