U.S Springfield, Model 1898, CAL: 30-40 KRAG, MFG: 1898, SN: 143067, Bolt Action Rifle, 30'' round barrel. The straight grip & finger grooved forend wood stock is very good & solid. It has darkened from age & oil, with several small nicks & dings. It carries a faint Circle-P armory proof stamp behind trigger guard, w/ two well worn letters. The upper hand gaurd has a 2'' hairline crack at the receiver end. Receiver is marked ''Model 1898'' in front of U.S. Springfield Armory & SN on left side. The metal blue finish rates 50% on barrel, with all other parts having an even brown patina. Bore is very good, with strong rifling, but rust spotting. Rear sight is a slide adjusting ladder sight, with graduation setting from 3 to 6 on left side & 7 to 18 along the top. Front sight is pinned blade in large metal base The buttstock carries a trapdoor steel buttplate, with no 3 piece cleaning rod or oiler present. Front and rear sling swivels present. This was the first U.S. smokeless service rifle, later replaced by the 1903 Springfield. The rifle has a unique bolt action mechanism. The magazine can be opened to accept cartridges & when closed, will feed the rounds up into the action. This allows for fast & easy loading, which was an improvement & appreciated feature at the time. Mechanically sound & a good example. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 400 to 800
